Smartlipo vs. Traditional Lipo

Smartlipo vs. Traditional Lipo

Are you looking for a body contouring procedure to eliminate areas of unwanted fat? If so, you have several options at the practice of Dr. Sandra Margoles.

Traditional liposuction is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted fat from the body. Dr. Margoles has performed the procedure many times with great results. She is pleased to offer a less-invasive alternative called Smartlipo. Smartlipo improves upon the safety and efficacy of traditional liposuction, and offers a few additional benefits.

The best way to decide which procedure is better for you is to meet with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Margoles. She can evaluate you and your needs and explain what each procedure entails. Whatever your personal goals may be, Dr. Margoles will help you find a solution.

It’s always a good idea to research your treatment options on your own so you can have a more informed discussion with your plastic surgeon.

Procedural Details

Traditional liposuction is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions in the treatment area and inserts a hollow tube (called a cannula) through the incisions. She moves the cannula back and forth to break up the fatty tissue, and uses suction to remove the fat from the body.

Smartlipo can be performed using local anesthesia (thereby eliminating some of the risks of anesthesia-related complications). The surgeon makes very small incisions in the treatment area and inserts the Smartlipo cannula. The cannula delivers thermal energy to liquefy the fat cells, making it easier to remove them from the body. The laser also seals off blood vessels, reducing bleeding, and stimulates the production of collagen for tighter skin.

Treatment Areas

Traditional liposuction can treat large areas of the body such as the abdomen, buttocks, back, legs and arms. The cannula used during traditional liposuction is larger than the Smartlipo cannula, so it is able to reach a wider treatment area.

Smartlipo uses a smaller cannula and smaller incisions than traditional liposuction. It is ideal for treating the neck, jawline, underneath the chin, arms, “love handles” around the waist, saddlebags, knees and male breast area.

Recovering from traditional liposuction generally takes about a week. Swelling, bruising and discomfort are common, temporary side effects.

The Smartlipo recovery is much shorter — in fact, many patients are able to resume work and their normal activities within two days of the procedure. Thanks to Smartlipo’s laser technology, there is significantly less bleeding, swelling and bruising.

Because of the size of the incisions, traditional liposuction is more likely than Smartlipo to cause permanent scarring. Also, traditional liposuction does not have the skin-tightening effect of Smartlipo, so the skin may not contract tightly over the body’s new curves and contours.

You can achieve beautiful results with both procedures. However, you will want to weigh the pros and cons of each before making a decision about your treatment.
