Liposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed in the country and in Dr. Sandra Margoles’ own Greenwich plastic surgery practice. Thanks to the latest advances in plastic surgery, there are several techniques and variations of liposuction, all of which come with benefits and limitations. Dr. Margoles is pleased to offer her patients traditional liposuction and Smartlipo, also known as laser liposuction. In this blog post, the trusted plastic surgeon discusses the differences between the two techniques.
What Do Liposuction and Smartlipo Accomplish?
Traditional liposuction is performed solely to remove stubborn fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure can be used to treat various body areas including the arms, neck, cheeks, abdomen, hips, buttocks and thighs.
Smartlipo is also used to eliminate fatty deposits from these body areas but has an additional purpose that traditional liposuction does not: skin tightening. In Smartlipo, the laser heat triggers the body’s natural collagen process, resulting in a tighter-looking appearance.
Traditional liposuction involves making strategically placed incisions in the treatment area. Dr. Margoles inserts a small, thin tube (called a cannula) through these incisions to break up and suction fatty tissue in the treatment area. Once the desired amount of tissue has been removed, the incisions are sutured closed.
Smartlipo uses laser heat to soften and liquefy the fat tissue. This allows for easier removal with a cannula. Smartlipo typically requires smaller incisions than traditional liposuction.
Because Smartlipo is minimally invasive, it requires a shorter recovery time than traditional liposuction. Patients should expect to take one to two weeks off from their normal activities after traditional liposuction. They will also need to wear a compression garment (to aid the healing tissues) over the treatment area for up to six weeks. After Smartlipo, most patients are able to resume their normal activities within a few days. A compression garment will need to be worn for approximately one week after Smartlipo.
Choosing a Procedure
Choosing a liposuction technique is a personal decision that can only be made after a personal consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Sandra Margoles. During your consultation, Dr. Margoles will examine your area of concern as well as discuss your aesthetic goals with you in order to design an appropriate treatment plan.
