Tips for Making Your Facelift Last

Tips for Making Your Facelift Last

A rejuvenated facial appearance through facelift surgery has the potential to last well over 10 years. However, results vary, as each patient’s genes, skin and lifestyles are different. While there is nothing that can be done about genetics, there are several everyday habits and maintenance steps that can help prolong your facelift results. In this blog post, leading plastic surgeon Dr. Sandra Margoles shares a few tips that can help make your youthful facial appearance last for years to come.

Moisturize Regularly

Moisturizing helps the skin stay strong and firm by promoting the growth of collagen, a protein responsible for keeping your skin looking firm and elastic. A good moisturizer also keeps the skin hydrated, preventing it from drying out or looking flaky. Choose a moisturizer with vitamins A and C to give your skin the nutrients it needs to stay looking vibrant.

Don’t Smoke

Quitting smoking is one of the lifestyle changes plastic surgeons require patients to make prior to surgery, as it increases the risk of complications during the procedure. Smoking is equally bad following surgery because it can shorten the lifespan of your facelift results. If you have problems quitting, your doctor may be able to recommend smoking cessation aids.

Refine Your Makeup Routine

Pulling at the skin of your lower eyelids when applying eyeliner or sleeping with your makeup on are easy ways to sabotage your facelift results. Eyeshadow and other makeup can settle into small crevices in the skin, like crow’s feet. Make it a habit to wash your face every night before going to bed. Use warm water to gently wipe makeup off. Remember to also clean your makeup brushes regularly to prevent bacteria from reaching your skin.

Practice Proper Sun Care

One of the primary reasons people seek facelift surgery in the first place is to minimize the signs of sun damage, including premature wrinkles and fine lines. Unfortunately, the sun poses the same threat to your skin after surgery. The best thing you can do is practice proper sun care year round. Apply sunscreen on your face, hands, neck and other areas of the body that are exposed to the sun. A wide-brimmed hat and wraparound sunglasses also minimize the amount of the sun’s UV rays that reach your skin.

Enhance with Injectables

While a facelift can help you turn back the clock, it does not stop the aging process indefinitely. Even with proper care and maintenance, you may notice your skin start to sag and fine lines form over time. This is why we recommend our patients maintain their beautiful facelift results with Botox and/or dermal filler treatments. These minimally invasive procedures can refresh your facelift results by eliminating wrinkles around the eyes, nose and mouth as soon as they begin to surface. Results from Botox and dermal filler injections are temporary, so recurring treatments are recommended.
