Do you have a ‘pouch’ in your belly that simply won’t go away no matter how much you diet and exercise? If you live in Fairfield County, Connecticut or Westchester County, New York and are interested in a Tummy Tuck to address this unwanted problem, Dr. Sandra Margoles is one of the most sought after cosmetic and plastic surgeons in the region. Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) is a very popular procedure that smooths and sculpts the mid-section.
Tummy Tuck Surgery Benefits
Almost anyone who is bothered by excess skin and tissue around the abdomen can benefit from tummy tuck. Tummy Tucks not only remove fatty tissue but they also tighten the muscles in the abdomen resulting in a flatter, smoother stomach.
Tummy Tucks Correct:
- Post-pregnancy belly
- Stubborn midsection fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise
- Sagging due to aging
- Stretching caused by significant weight fluctuations
- Excess skin following bariatric surgery
Are You A Candidate For A Tummy Tuck?
Men and women who are in good, overall health, and are unable to lose excess fat from their abdominal area through diet and exercise, and are able to maintain their weight are the best candidates for a tummy tuck. It is recommended that women postpone Tummy Tuck until they have finished having biological children, as future pregnancies could reverse the effects of surgery.
It is important to stress that Tummy Tuck surgery is not designed as a tool for weight loss. Suitable candidates for this procedure should be at, or close to, their target weight. Gaining or losing weight after surgery can negatively affect the results.
Abdominoplasty Initial Consultation
During your initial consultation Dr. Margoles will review your medical history and discuss the Tummy Tuck procedure with you in detail including cost, length of surgery, recovery time, medications, and follow-up visits. If she determines that a Tummy Tuck alone cannot fully re-sculpt your protruding belly, Dr. Margoles may recommend that liposuction be performed at the same time. She will be happy to show you before and after pictures to give you a clearer idea of what to expect from your procedure. Dr. Margoles and her staff are always available to answer any questions you may have.
Tummy Tuck Surgery Details
Surgery may last anywhere from 2-4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are commonly made from hipbone to hipbone, following the line of your pelvic area. An additional incision may be made around the navel, and the navel may be repositioned higher on the abdomen. The muscles in your abdomen are tightened by pulling them together and stitching them into place. Your skin is then re-draped over the newly contoured abdomen, and excess skin is removed. Sutures will close the incision, and surgical tape will be applied to the treated area.
Tummy Tuck Surgery Aftercare & Recovery
You will receive detailed post-surgery care instructions and Dr. Margoles and her staff will be available to answer any questions or concerns.. It is important to follow Dr. Margoles’ instructions carefully to ensure the best results and easiest recovery.
You can expect to experience some bruising, swelling and soreness following the procedure, which is normal. If you experience discomfort, Dr. Margoles may prescribe medication to alleviate the discomfort. You will be sent home with a binder or corset with 2 drains in place. Once home you will need to avoid bending, lifting and straining as your body heals from surgery. All stitches will dissolve and most patients return to work within 10 days. You can expect to return to your normal activities and exercise routing within 3 weeks. Although scars are permanent, they will fade with time.
You will notice your flatter, trimmer abdomen almost immediately.
The results of your tummy tuck should last for years as long as you maintain your weight and do not become pregnant.
Tummy Tuck FAQ
Is tummy tuck a solution for obesity?
Tummy tuck is not a weight management tool. In fact, obese individuals are advised to lose as much weight as possible before considering abdominoplasty. Patients who have lost significant weight and now notice loose skin on the belly are good candidates for the procedure.
Are there other options?
Tummy tuck is often an ideal surgical solution for loose skin and weakened muscles that may have developed in the abdominal area as a result of weight loss, pregnancy or simple aging. The stomach benefits from a smooth, tucked-in profile after removal of excess skin, some fat and tightening of abdominal muscles. Women often choose abdominoplasty as way to restore tone to stomach muscles that weakened or separated during pregnancy.
For patients whose fat is located mostly below the belly button, a partial abdominoplasty, or “mini tummy tuck,” may be advisable. Liposuction may be the preferred choice when creating a more natural-looking body shape requires the removal of a significant amount of fat in targeted areas. The two procedures can be combined in a same-day surgery known as lipoabdominoplasty. This technique has the added benefit of giving the surgeon increased flexibility in shaping the abdomen and surrounding area. It is an option for patients who have been unable to reduce their weight sufficiently to allow for a successful abdominoplasty.
Will tummy tuck erase stretch marks?
If your stretch marks are located in the lower abdomen, they will disappear when the skin is surgically removed. Stretch marks on the mid-portion of the abdomen can be improved but not entirely eliminated. Stretch marks on the upper abdomen usually remain.
How soon after a C-section can I have tummy tuck?
Dr. Margoles recommends waiting about three months for women who are not nursing. This allows time for the uterus to regain its normal size and shape. Moms who are breastfeeding should avoid general anesthesia.
Will a pregnancy reverse the results of tummy tuck?
Yes, and that is why Dr. Margoles recommends that women wait until the final pregnancy before doing the procedure. Pregnancy puts a great deal of strain on the abdomen, and muscles that have been repaired in an abdominoplasty may once again separate. Similarly, women or men who gain substantial weight in the future may see a recurrence of the issues that led them to choose a tummy tuck. Barring future pregnancies and dramatic weight gain, your tummy tuck should not need to be repeated to maintain your smooth and fit profile.
Will I retain my natural belly button?
Yes, you will still have your birthday-suit belly button after surgery, but it may undergo some repositioning, depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed. The belly button is typically separated from the surrounding skin, then sewn back after muscles and skin are tightened. In the case of a mini tummy tuck, the belly button is not separated or moved.
Will I have scars?
Because tummy tuck requires a large incision in the lower abdomen, scars are unavoidable. Dr. Margoles is careful to make the incision in the least noticeable area, usually on the bikini line. If scarring is a concern, a mini tummy tuck or liposuction can be considered, if appropriate.
Are there other benefits of tummy tuck?
In addition to the benefit of increased self-confidence, there may be other positive side effects. Tummy tuck appears to reduce the incidence of stress urinary incontinence and improve ventral and umbilical hernias. A tighter abdomen also seems to be associated with improved posture and even better weight management. For example, a study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found evidence of short- and long-term weight loss in women who underwent the procedure. Removal of fat cells appeared to alter the hormonal activity that governs appetite.
