ASPS Releases 2016 Plastic Surgery Statistics

ASPS Releases 2016 Plastic Surgery Statistics

More people are choosing to undergo plastic surgery, according to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Approximately 17.1 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in 2016, a 3 percent increase from the year before. In this blog post, trusted plastic surgeon Dr. Sandra Margoles breaks down the statistics and findings.

Top 5 Surgical Procedures

Of the 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures performed in 2016, the top five were:

Breast augmentation: 290,467 total, 4 percent increase from 2015

Liposuction: 235,237 total, 6 percent increase from 2015

Rhinoplasty: 223,018 total, 2 percent increase from 2015

Eyelid surgery: 209,020 total, 2 percent increase from 2015

Facelift: 131,106 total, 4 percent increase from 2015

Top 5 Minimally Invasive Procedures

A total of 15.5 minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in 2016. The most popular were:

Botox: 7 million total, 4 percent increase from 2015

Dermal fillers: 2.6 million total, 2 percent increase from 2015

Chemical peels: 1.36 million total, 4 percent increase from 2015

Laser hair removal: 1.1 million total, 1 percent decrease from 2015

Microdermabrasion: 775,000 total, 3 percent decrease from 2015

Fat Grafting on the Rise

According to the ASPS’ findings, more patients are opting for fat transfer over implants and dermal fillers to enhance their appearance.

“Plastic surgeons harvest a patient’s unwanted fat from their abdomen using liposuction and then inject it to lift and rejuvenate other areas such as the face, buttock and even the breast,” said ASPS President Debra Johnson, MD. “Because the material injected is the patient’s own fat the results typically last longer than fillers.”

Breast augmentation using fat grafting, a procedure Dr. Margoles specializes in, experienced the highest surge among fat grafting procedures, with a 72 percent increase from the previous year.
