From the Ivy League and Geneva to Private Practice
As an undergraduate, Sandra Margoles studied biochemistry at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, before completing a Master's degree in neuroscience and psychology. Afterwards, she worked as a clinical neuropsychology associate and lecturer at the Yale University School of Medicine and the University of Connecticut Health Center. She also served as a research investigator for the World Health Organization (WHO) before entering Dartmouth Medical School.
During her time as a medical student, Dr. Margoles was granted the opportunity to continue her earlier scientific research overseas. After working on projects involving child/maternal health in Geneva, Switzerland, she completed her medical degree with honors.
But it wasn't until she studied general surgery at Harvard Medical School's Beth Israel Hospital that Dr. Margoles realized her passion for plastic and reconstructive surgery. She worked with the late Robert Goldwyn – then chief of plastic surgery at Beth Israel Hospital and editor-in-chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery – and found her inspiration in truly improving the lives of her patients.
"As a plastic surgeon, you make people happy even if they're accident victims or ill," says Dr. Margoles. "You're making them better and happier." She also enjoys the challenges of plastic surgery: "It's a very artistic profession. Each project is unique. I have to think on my feet. No two cases are ever the same."
After completing her general surgery training, Dr. Margoles entered a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital. During her time there, she received numerous awards, research grants, and honors. She became one of the original investigators into the use of lasers for skin resurfacing, which has since transformed the face of her profession.
Finally, after many years of tireless work and study, in 1999 Dr. Margoles completed her training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Soon afterwards, she moved into private practice in Connecticut.
