Are You A Candidate For Breast Implant Revision?

The best candidates for breast implant revisions are women who wish to improve the appearance of their previous augmentation surgery. Medical indications where breast implant revision surgery may benefit you include implant displacement, visible rippling, capsular contracture, or ruptured implant.

Often breast revision includes revision of the size or shape of the implant and in some cases a breast lift, breast reduction, or removal.

Your Initial Breast Revision Consultation

During your initial consultation Dr. Margoles will listen to your desires and needs to determine if breast implant revision is right for you and which procedure will best fit your needs and provide the most natural and beautiful results. If breast lift implant proves to be a better option she will explain the procedures to you. Once determined, she will discuss your procedure in detail, including cost, recovery time, follow up appointments, and medications. She will also be happy to show you before and after pictures to give you a clearer idea of what to expect from your procedure. Dr. Margoles and her Greenwich staff are always available to answer any questions you may have.

The Day Of Breast Implant Revision Surgery

The length of surgery will vary depending on the scope of the procedure. You will be in the recovery room for 1 hour following surgery, after which you will be sent home. All patients must have a responsible adult with them to return home. It is also strongly advised that a responsible adult stay the night with you.

Breast Implant Revision Surgery Aftercare & Recovery

While the results of your breast implant surgery are immediate, you will experience some post-surgical swelling, bruising and soreness. Wearing an elastic bandage or support bra will reduce swelling and help the breasts. You should also expect a temporary loss of feeling in your nipples and surrounding skin that should improve following your surgery. Results of the surgery will continue to improve as your healing continues.

During your initial recovery, you must avoid bending, heavy lifting, and strenuous activity, including exercise. Dr. Margoles will give you instructions for caring for your incisions, wearing your support garment, and scheduling your follow up visits. Your first follow up will be scheduled 5-7 days post-surgery.

Slowly, you can return to work, exercise and the rest of your normal routine.

You will receive detailed post-surgery care instructions and Dr. Margoles and her staff will be available to answer any questions or concerns. It is important to follow Dr. Margoles’ instructions carefully to ensure the best results and easiest recovery.

Once you have completely healed from surgery, your breasts will look more youthful.

Breast Implant Revision FAQ

Why do women choose breast revision?

There are many reasons patients select a breast revision procedure. Sometimes it is a matter of preference; for example, a patient simply does not like the look or feel of implants, or the goals she was hoping to achieve were not met. In other cases, the initial surgery may have gone wrong, or there were side effects that were not sufficiently anticipated by the surgeon. These situations include:

  • Capsular contracture, which develops when scar tissue forms around an implant. With this condition, patients feel pain and notice a hardening of breast tissue. This type of scarring can also cause an implant to rupture.
  • Symmastia, in which migration of the implants or improper positioning makes it look like the breasts are joined in the middle of the chest.
  • Breasts that look asymmetrical. This may have been caused by implant malposition, and was immediately obvious after surgery. It can also be the result of implants that were properly placed but have moved from their original location.
  • Implants whose outlines are clearly visible or have developed a “rippling” appearance.
  • Implants that have ruptured.

If I choose a different implant size, will the breast revision procedure be more complex?

The surgery will be more complicated than the original placement, as scar tissue forms after most surgical procedures. If you choose smaller implants, the area surrounding the new implant will need to be tightened, and skin may need to be lifted. An increase in breast size will require the surgical creation of a larger pocket to accommodate the bigger implant. You may also choose to try a different type of implant. Some women decide that saline implants feel less natural than they expected, and opt for surgery to swap saline for a silicone gel variety. Other women may have health or safety concerns about silicone gel implants, and choose saline for their breast revision procedure.

What if I would like to remove the implants altogether?

Breast revision is also appropriate for women who decide that implants did not meet their aesthetic expectations, or felt less natural than they hoped. In a few cases, patients have health conditions, such as autoimmune diseases, that may be aggravated by the presence of implants. When implants are removed, the pocket that held the implant must be refilled with your natural tissue to restore an aesthetically pleasing profile. This involves a procedure that is similar to breast lift. When large implants are removed, the skin may have a stretched look; in addition, the breasts may appear to sag or have a deflated appearance. Dr. Margoles is skilled in reshaping and lifting your breast tissue to ensure your look is as natural as before your initial surgery.

Will I experience pain during recovery?

If your revision involved the removal of scar tissue, such as with capsular contracture, you may feel some discomfort, which will be managed with prescribed medication. Beyond that, your recovery will be very similar to that of your initial surgery. You will again experience soreness and swelling, and will need to limit activities for several days. It will actually take several months for the swelling to disappear.
