RHINOPLASTY in GREENWICH, CT & Westchester, NY

Nose surgery (rhinoplasty) is a commonly practised plastic surgery procedure that involves reshaping the nose for aesthetic purposes or to correct breathing issues.

While perfection is difficult to achieve, patients who choose nose surgery often experience increased self-confidence along with their enhanced appearance. In addition to the visibly pleasing outcome that rhinoplasty can achieve, this procedure can also correct breathing issues or deformities that occur at birth.

Rhinoplasty Surgery Details

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure that takes between 90 and 120 minutes. Patients receive an intravenous antibiotic prior to beginning procedure. Specialized tools are used to reshape your nose and close the incision with sutures. Nasal dressing or a splint will be inserted to help maintain the structure and integrity of your newly constructed nose.

Following nose surgery you will spend approximately 1 hour in the recovery room after which you will be sent home. All patients must have a responsible adult with them to return home. This person should plan on spending the night with you.

Rhinoplasty Aftercare & Recovery

rhinoplasty before & after

Recovery times will vary depending on the extent of the surgery. Most patients return to work after a week to 10 days. Your nose will ache and your face will feel puffy during the first 24 hours. Some bleeding may occur within the first days following surgery. Bruising and swelling are most prominent on the third day and will then fade and flatten within two weeks. Your nose should be protected from impact and sun exposure for several months post-surgery. Post-surgery visits to monitor your recovery and remove any nasal packing and splints are essential. Your first post-op visit will be scheduled 5-7 days post-surgery. You will receive detailed post-surgery care instructions and Dr. Margoles and her staff will be available to answer any questions or concerns. It is important to follow Dr. Margoles’ instructions carefully to ensure the best results and easiest recovery.

Preservation Rhinoplasty FAQs

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of a rhinoplasty procedure in the U.S. is $5,483. Depending on the nature of the rhinoplasty procedure, it might be covered by insurance.

This will depend on whether the procedure is deemed “essential” – i.e., necessary for the patients’ well-being and quality of life.

After rhinoplasty surgery, the best way to sleep is on your back in a slightly elevated position.

This position is beneficial for several reasons:

  • It reduces congestion and swelling after rhinoplasty surgery
  • It helps blood drain from the healing area
  • It ensures there is no pressure on the nose, as caused by stomach or side sleeping

We recommend using several pillows to prop your mid and upper back and a bigger pillow to elevate your head further. This support provides the ideal sleeping position for recovery from rhinoplasty surgery.

Ideally, patients should wait as long as possible before blowing their nose after rhinoplasty surgery – up to 3 to 4 weeks.

Most surgeons will say it’s okay to blow your nose after 7-10 days. However, the longer, the better, as blowing the nose places strain and pressure on the incisions, delaying healing and extending recovery time.

Patients must realize that rhinoplasty surgery is a major surgical procedure, and the body needs downtime and rest following the process to recover and permanently set the results.

Patients should refrain from any exercise in the first week after surgery, then should avoid strenuous activity for three weeks. Furthermore, the treatment area must remain as dry as possible to prevent infection and expedite recovery.

It’s also recommended to avoid direct sunlight, as this can also delay healing and potentially cause scarring.

When performed by an inexperienced and non-board-certified surgeon, rhinoplasty carries several potentially serious risks. These include:

  • Anesthesia complications
  • Loss of sensation in the surrounding skin
  • Infection
  • Problems breathing
  • Skin swelling, discoloration, and scarring
  • The need for revision rhinoplasty surgery

However, if you choose your surgeon wisely and ensure they are experienced, affiliated, and certified, these risks are minimized.

The best place to find rhinoplasty before and after photos is with your surgeon. Any experienced and certified surgeon confident in their work will have outstanding testimonials from their past patients.

It’s always a good idea to ask your surgeon for their before-and-after photos to verify the quality of their work for yourself.

Finding the best rhinoplasty surgeon depends on several factors.

Only consider surgeons who are board-certified, experienced, and qualified.

Then, consider the testimonials of your surgeon’s past patients, including their before and after photographs.

Finally, consider the results you’re looking for from your rhinoplasty and how your surgeon’s experience aligns with those expectations.

You also might consider non-surgical rhinoplasty options as well, which can provide outstanding results without the need for a lengthy recovery.
