Body Contouring After Weight Loss

Major weight loss can leave you with an excess amount of weak or sagging skin. Body contouring surgery helps to improve your appearance by removing areas of severely stretched skin and tissue. Typically performed in stages, body contouring gives you a smoother physique and is considered a final phase in your weight loss experience.

Benefits of Body Contouring

Healthy adults who have undergone a massive weight loss transformation are the best candidates for a body contouring procedure. If you have undergone a weight reduction surgery and your weight has stabilized, you may be a candidate for this cosmetic surgery as well.

Body Contouring Treatment Areas:

  • Face, neck and jowls
  • Upper arms
  • Breasts
  • Abdominal area including sides and lower back
  • Buttocks, groin and thighs

Body contouring procedures help smooth out areas that were lacking the elasticity to conform to your newly reduced body size and are often performed in stages. Dr. Margoles can recommend which surgical procedures you will need in order to achieve your goals. Some of the procedures include a body lift, neck lift, breast lift, arm lift, or thigh lift.  After surgery, you will have a firmer and slimmer contour and an improved self-image.

Your Body Contouring with Dr. Margoles

Body contouring procedures are performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation and may include an overnight stay. Dr. Margoles will discuss with you how to strategically place your incision so that it may be easily concealed. The size and shape of the incision depends on the amount and location where the excess skin needs to be removed. Once the incision is made, the unsupported tissue is removed, the skin is pulled tight and the incisions is closed with sutures.

What to Expect After Body Contouring

After your surgery, dressings will be wrapped around the treated area to minimize swelling and help support your new contour. Small tubes may be used to help drain excess fluid. Care instructions will be provided by Dr. Margoles.

Some discomfort is common, but prescription medication can help ease the irritation. Recovery times can be different between patients, but you can expect initial healing to take 7-14 days. At this time, sutures will need to be removed and you will be able to return to normal activities. Healing will continue for many weeks and strenuous activities should be avoided during this time.

Scars will gradually fade over months, but more than likely they will be permanent. Once you have completely recovered from one procedure, you can begin preparation for the next stage in your body contouring process.
