WHY EYELID SURGERY IS ON THE RISE

Puffy upper eyelids can add to a tired-looking face, while unsightly bags underneath the eyes can make you look older or unapproachable. This is why it shouldn’t come as a surprise that eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed. Here, Dr. Sandra Margoles shares the benefits of eyelid surgery.

Brighter, Younger Looking Eyes

There are several factors that can make someone look older or exhausted. Over time, the skin loses its elasticity, muscle tone is lost and fat is displaced. This causes the skin on the upper eyelids to droop or sag, and dark circles underneath the eyes to form. Hereditary traits or lifestyle habits like not wearing sunglasses outdoors can cause premature wrinkles or fine lines to appear. The result is often an undesired one; you may look older, upset when you’re actually happy, or unrested even after getting a good night’s sleep.

Eyelid surgery can help the appearance of both the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure removes excess skin and tissue and/or lifts and tightens drooping skin from the upper eyelids to make the eyes look bigger and more alive. Eyelid surgery can also remove excess skin and fat from the lower eyelids to reduce the appearance of wrinkles or dark circles underneath the eyes. Patients are able to enjoy a vibrant, fresh facial appearance that matches their mood.

Improved Eyesight

While many people seek eyelid surgery for aesthetic purposes, others choose the procedure for medical reasons. Loose or “falling” skin from the upper eyelids can partially block a person’s eyes, interfering with vision. Heavy, excess skin on the eyelids can make it difficult for someone to open their eyes completely. This can make everyday tasks like driving dangerous. Some people may experience irritation from excess folds of eyelid skin rubbing together. In these cases, eyelid surgery may be necessary. Through eyelid surgery, excess skin is removed, and skin is tightened to allow the patient to open the eyes with ease.

Am I a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

You may be an ideal candidate for eyelid surgery if:

  • You are bothered by drooping, sagging skin on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both
  • You are experiencing irritation from excess folds of skin on the eyelids
  • You have trouble seeing properly because of hanging skin on the eyelids
  • You are in good overall health and have no serious eye conditions
  • You are not pregnant
