RECOVERING FROM EYELID SURGERY

A major consideration of having any type of elective procedure, including eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), is what the recovery will entail. In general, eyelid surgery recovery is quick and straightforward. You will be back to work and your normal routine very quickly, providing that you follow all of Dr. Margoles’ instructions. Listening to the advice of your plastic surgeon is the best way to minimize the risk of post-operative complications.

Here are some of the things that you can expect during recovery from blepharoplasty.

Immediately Following Surgery

Immediately after your surgery, you will rest in a recovery suite at the surgical center for a short time. Dr. Margoles will lubricate your eyes. If you have swelling or bruising, cold compresses may be applied to reduce the side effects. Your eyes may be loosely covered with soft gauze.

You will not be able to drive after surgery, so you need to make arrangements ahead of time for a loved one to accompany you home from the surgical center and help you get settled at home.

The Night after Surgery

You will need to take any medications that Dr. Margoles has prescribed, including anti-inflammatory medications and pain medication if you need it. Make sure you have your prescriptions filled ahead of time so you can go straight home after surgery and start resting. For the rest of the day and evening you should relax as much as possible. Try to avoid any activity that could irritate or disturb your eyes. Do not remove the dressings or bandages without Dr. Margoles’ instructions.

The Days Following Surgery

You should keep your head elevated as much as possible for several days. If Dr. Margoles has advised you to do so, remove or change your surgical dressings. It is best if you refrain from wearing contact lenses during this time, but check with Dr. Margoles for details. Continue to avoid strenuous activity, as well as any exercise which could result in contact with your eyes, until she clears you.

Most patients recover within seven to 10 days following surgery, but this varies on an individual basis. Eyelid surgery incisions will fade gradually until they are eventually barely visible.
